Summer after moving in our ceiling caved in after a leak in the attic.

In one house, the front doorknob fell off the day after we closed on it.

In our current house, in the DC area, a part of the basement started leaking in a rainstorm during the walkthrough. Just due to poor drainage away from the house Fortunately the real estate attorneys office was near a Home Depot.

Not sure if it was AC stopped cooling (filled Freon I think) or boiler died (replaced boiler). I think within 2 years of buying - we still had the warranty.

A few months in. We were replacing the old dishwasher and the water shut off valve didn't close.

The day after we moved in, a fuse blew in the HVAC system.

Plumbing - main water valves didn't work. Luckily we fix it before there was an issue but we knew going in the house needed work so it wasn't a surprise.

The day after closing. We had torrential rains, and the basement flooded about two hours after contractors head installed new carpeting.

HVAC went out that first summer! Good times.

Kitchen sink stopped working within three months of us moving in. I figured out it was the garbage disposal, and fixed it myself. I've never been more proud, and never shocked my husband more. He bragged about this for a solid year.

Heating went out 3 years after moving into the house. It was mid January and we were in Mexico. Thankfully my mom was stopping by the house to grab some things and noticed how cold the house was. We were able to get it fixed (thankfully a simple fix) before the pipes froze.

Haven't had any other issues.

Day 3. We didn't know the drain at the bottom of the driveway hadn't been cleaned out in (probably) years and the garage flooded in a heavy rainstorm. The garage that was holding most of our full moving boxes since we were still undergoing renovations (kitchen wasn't done). I opened the garage door to get something and discovered about 6" of water. DH and I had to haul dozens of wet boxes from the garage to store them in the attic. UGH.

First week. I continued to use flushable wipes just like I had at my old house. Had parents visiting to see the new place and literally had feces backing up into the basement tub. It was disgusting.

Plumbing, and within a couple of months. Had to replace a stack that serves 3 bathrooms, all new pipes, etc. Around $10k but an additional $1k for 2 different plumbers to come out first, misdiagnose the problem, and charge around $500 each to fix that fake problem.

Curious... what was your first home emergency after buying your current home, and how soon after buying did it happen?
