OP, why not ask them? I was rejected many years ago, and they told me why (screwy landlord would not allow a cat despite pet friendly building). I ended up moving.

A clear mismatch between the animal’s needs and the adopter’s lifestyle. For example, someone who is mobility impaired with no yard and no household help wanting a large, high-energy dog.
A history of visits from animal control or having your pets end up at the shelter because of failure to secure them properly.
