Subject: Buying a car/moving/taxes MD
Maryland does not have an annual car inspection like some states do but you have to get it inspected when you move the car here. That one time inspection is $100 and with a 10 year old car they will “find” a thousand dollars in repairs. Once you have that inspection done, you’ll be able to register the vehicle. I looked up CT and there is a 6% sales tax on car sales, same as MD. You will have 60 days to register the car. If you don’t make the 60 daya (and the inspection has to come first) then MD charges you the full 6% sales tax again. If you make the deadline, they “only” charge you about $200.

Yep. It’s awful.

My parents are moving to MD from a state with a higher tax then MD. We plan to buy one of their cars. It is 10 years old....we will give them the value they are offered as a trade in. How do the taxes work? Should they sell it to us with CT registration and we register it in MD. Should they register it in MD and then sell it to us? Does it matter?
