The idea that the shirt needs to cover your bum is very dated. At least 10 years. I work with teens. They all wear regular shirts with leggings. I can't bring myself to do this myself with my 40+ body but I've come to appreciate that each generation has its own definition of appropriate and my notions are antiquated while theirs are more body positive.

They have a dress code dictating how they wear leggings and shirts? I’m assuming no mid drift, but other than that, I doubt it is written into your dress code leggings must be covered to wear thigh.

I think leggings look awful on everyone but toddlers and preschoolers, unless at the gym, tunic wearers included. But if my teen wanted to wear leggings and a top, as long as her stomach wasn’t bare I’d let it go. I would make sure she wasn’t wearing some thin cheap see through leggings, but let her pick her own clothes. You probably have been putting her in leggings all through childhood, so what did you expect?

AE tunics can be cute.

Agree with others that this is not the biggest deal.

We have the same rule, although I'm okay with just covering most of the butt. If your daughter is very tall, I'd also look at dresses at somewhere like Francesca's. Sometimes the dresses are short enough and styled plainly enough that they look like tops.

I got a nice butt-length sweater at Loft recently.

Nordstrom, Alo, Zella, and few others in the women's athletic department. There are some cute sweat shirt tops that are long and some trendy tops as well. There are trendy young peoples brands in that department just blanking on the names.

Nordstoms in their section near topshop has a few as well. Juniors.

Urban Outfitters would also be a place to check.

How old is she?

Hi DCUM, please help me solve an ongoing argument I'm having with my teen daughter. She likes to wear skin tight leggings with short tops. I won't let her wear leggings in public unless the top is long enough to cover her bottom.

Can anyone recommend some tunic length tops that a teen will find acceptable? Long or short sleeves both ok. (She doesn't like v necks for some reason).
