My grandmother - may she RIP - was famous in our town for doing this. Not only would she show up at your home unannounced (but always with a gift or some dish she’d cooked), she’d stay for most of the day. It had to tick people off, but besides that everyone loved her.

From OP: I have many friends and don’t mind visitors but please text or call first so I can get dressed and throw dishes in the dishwasher before you get here!

We arrived at my parents’ house late on December 22nd, after a long day of traveling. Late morning on the 23rd, when my kids and I were still in pajamas, an elderly relative showed up at the door unannounced. She hadn’t been to my parents’ house in 5 years, and the last time had been unannounced as well. It’s nice that she wanted to visit, but the timing was inconvenient and I wished she could have given us even just a half hour’s notice so that I could have been dressed and at least somewhat groomed.

Totally agree. I'm in a nightgown without a bra, my legs aren't shaved, my contacts are out, I have face mask on. This is not the "me" you were expecting or hoping to see.

I think it's more of a personal thing than a cultural thing. I think people of all cultures may feel this way. It's also possible that in some cultures one would feel like a pariah for not wanting drop in visitors.

I think most people know that there are two kinds of people - those who like visitors and those who don't. Once you know someone, you know if they are the kind of person you can drop in on or not. Occasionally, with newer friends or acquaintances you take a gamble and you lose.

I don't think it is rude at all to drop in but you have to know your audience. I love when people drop by. My house isn't always clean but I assume they aren't dropping by to do a photo shoot. I can move the piles of laundry and find a space for them to sit while we sip tea and chat and catch up.

It may seem anti-social but please don’t show up ringing my doorbell unannounced. Chances are very good that I will not be dressed and my house will not be clean. Very embarrassing and intrusive. Text or call first. I know neighbors etc in the old days “dropped by” for various reasons but today it seems rude. OK, go ahead DCUM, flame me.
