Both kids had them out. The surgery is very routine as the ENTs do this constantly. Recovery for both was smooth and pretty quick.

DD8 had them out a few months ago. Her issues - snoring, mouth breathing, frequent wake ups (sleep study showed an average of 16/hour), tired throughout the day. She also has allergies and the turbinates in her nose were enlarged. The ENT had us try meds first to see if her sleep would improve with just that. They didn’t, and meds can’t cure the sleep apnea anyway. Plus they had side effects, mainly affecting her behavior. She was on Singulair, Flonase, Zyrtec, and melatonin.

Surgery went well, recovery was ok. They had us alternate between Tylenol and Advil for pain, but by the second day, we switched to just Advil because she was throwing up the Tylenol. Soft foods and lots of ice cream/popsicles for about two weeks, then she was back to normal.

It was an immediate improvement in sleep for her. She falls asleep so much faster and stays asleep now during the night. It also improved her behavior because she isn’t so cranky during the day and she is off the Singulair. Still takes Zyrtec for allergies, but everything drains so much better now because they also reduced the turbinates in her nose.

15 years ago, but yes, DD had tonsils and adenoids out and tubes put in at age 2.5. Excellent sleeper ever since!

We got our DD’s (4 years old) tonsils and adenoids out just a few months ago. It was a long process to get there since our ENT said they wouldn’t remove them just because they were big. However I knew she had some major sleep issues since she snored a lot and was always tired even after 12 hours of sleep. We pushed and got a sleep study done and it showed that she had major sleep apnea and oxygenation problems. I am so glad that we went with our gut and pushed for the sleep study.

We had the surgery done around Thanksgiving time and she was home for 2 weeks. Note coming out of anesthesia for little kids is horrible. She was completely out of it and screaming and trying to rip her IV out. It was insane. We stayed overnight in the hospital, which isn’t common. Usually kids just go home after they wake up. However her sleep apnea was so bad that they wanted to monitor her for the first 24 hours after surgery.

First week was horrible. She was super sick from the anesthesia and all of the Tylenol and Motrin. But she bounced back the second week.

She is sleeping so much better now. I haven’t heard her snore at all. Good luck!

Our 2nd DD (almost 3) had ear tubes put in at 13 months and later - when her nose constantly ran green and there was some indication of trouble hearing and heavy snoring - her adenoids removed. Maybe 20 months or so? I honestly don’t remember! It helped tremendously with the nasal infections and snoring. Her speech is still lagging a bit but she’s passed all hearing tests now. At the time of her surgeries her tonsils looked fine, but at last appointment they were bigger so we’ll watch them. Adenoids were no big deal - she slept off the anesthetic and was herself the next day if not sooner.

Our first DD had adenoids and ear tubes at 22 months and her tonsils removed just after her 4th bday. The ENT suggested waiting to 4 so she would understand what was happening. She had TONS of mini wake ups in her sleep study, breathed with her mouth open etc. The ENT who did her adenoids said her tonsils were huge and the (different because we moved) ENT who removed her tonsils said they were some of the biggest she’d seen.

After the ear tube / adenoid surgery she slept a few hours and then wanted to go to the zoo! After tonsils she was much more sore. A few days of stronger meds and a few days of less strong meds - the 4th or 5th day she got more sore again. About 10 days of no running around but probably 3-5 days of being quite sore. Still, I’m very glad we did it. Better sleep for sure and she’s had strep 3-4 times in the 3 years since removing her tonsils (if not more) so I suspect (with less sleep for her immune system and being more prone) she’d have been more sick if she’d had her tonsils.

The reason we did 2nd DD’s adenoids right away when offered (she was too young at her 13 mo surgery) is because we knew how much it helped 1st DD

also I had the adenoid surgery when I was little. Not a big deal. The biggest possible benefit (not sure if this is why) is that my siblings had lifelong seasonal allergies and I didn’t.

4.5 year old only sleeping 10 hours? If that’s a total sleep and not just night, it would be normal for her to be tired. My kids needed at least 12 at that age.

My 4.5 year old sleeps badly almost every night. She never sleeps at same spot, moving around, grinds teeth & snores sometimes. She is full of energy, but she yawns all the time after 10 hours of sleep early morning almost every day. Someone mentioned to me that she may have sleep apnea, enlarged tonsils and/or adenoids. We just recently took her to do a sleep study, but results won't be back till 2 months after. The sleep study was not a nice experiences (she was scared of many wires on her & she cried in fear), and I am glad that it was over. While waiting for the sleep study results, I am anxious to know what could happen. What happens if they find out that she has sleep apnea, are they going to refer her to see ENT to check tonsils & adenoids? What happens that if they don't find her having sleep apnea, what would they do/recommend? I just google tonsils and adenoids surgery, and it scares me a lot with anesthesia, after-surgery pain & recovery, possibly side effects etc.. Anyone has kids been there or done that before? Good results or no results? And, how's post-surgery pain & recovery?
