Dual exhaust system? Or single pipe with upstream and downstream cats? The difference matters.

If it's a dual exhaust, replace them both. Even if the other one is working, it's near failure anyway.

If it's a upstream - downstream system, odds are the front cat is bad, and the rear is ok. Replace the front, keep the rear.

I have a large vehicle. One of the two catalytic converters apparently needs to be replaced. Shop #1 said go ahead and replace one. Shop #2 said it's like buying one new shoe, and both must be replaced.
Vehicle is high mileage and I don't want to spend more than necessary (obviously) but also don't want to replace one just to have the other go out. I know very little about vehicles. Can someone with more experience offer advice?
