This is OP - they confirmed that there was a mistake in the report they gave me yesterday and they were able to factor in the nuchal measurement. Sigh. They weren’t worried about the AFP although they acknowledged it’s something to watch.

I switched mid-pregnancy with my first from INOVA Alexandria’s MFMs to VHC. They were great. I did not switch OBs.

For second pregnancy, have gone back to VHC and they coordinate care well with the practices that deliver at VHC. I have been happy with Northern Virginia Physicians to Women.

OP, your experience does not sound normal.

This is OP. I haven’t been seeing an OB because this group does everything. I feel like I made a mistake. She handed me my nuchal translucency form and just said “any questions” without walking me through my results. I didn’t understand my results but she said everything looked okay so I didn’t worry. But when I got home I worried (as you can see)! My nuchal results form also said at the bottom, last bullet, “nuchal translucency was not included in risk calculation. CRL must be between 45 and 84 mm.” Wait a minute. SO they didn’t get the nuchal measurement? That was the whole reason I had the appointment. Also, I had been told my baby was measuring on track and at 12 weeks + the baby would be within this range. So how is it that the nuchal measurement was not factored into the risk assessment? The space on the form for CRL was blank. (So were they basing the results entirely on the NT bloodwork? But the report had the date of the NT ultrasound and had the name of my stenographer from yesterday, etc.). I also saw an AFP reading on there that was off the charts high so I was of course wondering what that meant. I’m going to call today to see if they can explain this better to me, but I feel like this was not at all a good experience and I don’t want to go through this again.

Are you seeing an MFM specialist on top of an OB for regular appointments? If so, you could probably get a referral from your OB to another MFM office, but still deliver at Inova Fairfax if that's where your regular OB is based out of.

The fact that she mentioned you may have something and then refused to discuss it because she isn't sure is total crap. In this day and age she has to know you will google it. I would absolutely take that up with her. I got so sick of the dismissive behavior by my practice that I put it in writing and asked for answers in writing. Seriously they are providing a service and you are the customer. Demand answers.

It is ok. Not nearly as good as Fairfax. The other good ones are in Maryland or DC.

I lived NOrthern Virginia Physicians to Women at VHC. I saw them for normal OB care and then had additional visits with the MFM staff at VHC. It worked for me and I liked the MFMs at VHC a lot. My previous pregnancy I saw Pinkertt and Gallegher at Greater Washington MFM. They have Fairfax office

I'm not seeing the MFM practice regularly, just for ultrasounds and I'm definitely not impressed. Their practice is a mess and not representative of INOVA in my opinion.

I would see if you can be under the care of another OB at INOVA before switching entirely. It's the best hospital besides GW for a high risk birth.

This is OP. I had my nuchal screen today and thankfully all went well. But in passing the dr casually mentioned I may have something called a velamentous insertion but she wasn’t sure and we can’t know more at this stage. She said come back in a month and we will check it out again. When I asked for more details she didn’t want to go into it, because she wasn’t sure I had it, but of course the first thing I did was go home and google. !!! She was nice but she didn’t offer any more information than what I asked about any of the topics, and I left feeling unsettled. I am afraid it will be a loooooong pregnancy if this is a recurring experience. I am torn though - I really want the fairfax NICU and if the drs are good maybe that’s all that matters.

I am sorry to hear that about Dr. Khoury. Who have you seen? I definitely clicked more with Khoury than any of the others, but I absolutely got excellent care from all of them. I am a Fairfax inova patient and getting my amnio somewhere else. I think the doctors are great for the normal stuff (anatomy scan, NT scan etc...) but I think there are better doctors for more invasive procedures. As long as you have the results shared I don't see why it's a big deal to go somewhere else.

Too much info or not enough? I adore Dr. Khoury and 100% trust him to make the right call. He is absolutely the reason I have a full term baby after a disaster of a first pregnancy.

Hi everyone! Has anyone felt frustrated with their MFM and decided to switch during the pregnancy? I have had a couple of appointments with Dr Khoury’s group (although not with Dr Khoury) and have felt anxious after my appointments. I don’t feel like the bedside manner/degree of information I am getting is comforting. I wanted to go with fairfax INOVA because of the degree of the NICU, but am thinking maybe I’ll find another MFM I work better with. Has anyone done this? Is it difficult to do? Thanks!!!
