I was just thinking to myself that I need to track down a few documentaries that I have seen before and would like to watch again. One that was influential to me was "In the Year of the Pig" by DiAntonio. It was novel in a few ways, but primarily because it was produced and released during the Vietnam War and the use of footage without voice over narration was new. Here is a link to the NYT article about it--apparently it was available on Youtube, but I am not sure it still is.

Not the OP, but thanks for this recommendation. I've never heard of it, but it sounds like one I would like.

At first, I thought you were talking about the Wild and Wonderful Whites of West Virginia which is also hard to believe.

Wild Wild Country on Netflix is one of my favorites. And no, it’s not a mockumentary, as I mistakenly thought after about 10 minutes. This crazy shit really happened.

There's a new one on Netflix called Who Killed Little Gregory that was very good.

What types of documentaries do you like? Crime, sports, entertainment, activist, political, historical? Your preferences can help guide recommendations.

To me, a great documentary introduces you to a person or a subject and sucks you in until you can't stop thinking about it or them. I love movies that show me something completely unfamiliar or make me look at the familiar in a different way. When I see a good one, I want to read everything I can about the subject and talk to other people about it.

Here are few of my favorites of all time:

West of Memphis and the Paradise Lost movies

If you have HBO, they have many great documentaries, including At the Heart of Gold (about gymnastics and the Larry Nassar abuse scandal), Going Clear (about Scientology), Leaving Neverland (Michael Jackson), When the Levees Broke (Spike Lee film about Katrina). More recent documentaries include I Love You Now Die (about the young woman who bullied her boyfriend by text until he committed suicide), and The Inventor (about Theranos and Elizabeth Holmes).

I don't know if it is one of the best, but I'm fascinated by There's Something Wrong with Aunt Diane, also on HBO.

If you have Showtime, I've recently watched Prophet's Prey (about Warren Jeffs - so creepy) and Disgraced (about the Baylor University basketball scandal). Both were good.
