Ive had 3 dogs total as an adult. A Foxhound, a shepherd mix, and a lab ( poss mix)

The Foxhound was definitely the smartest, very stubborn as well, but understood so many words, including when I used the word in a sentence and not talking to her directly.
The shepherd is the best behaved, can be off the leash all the time ( I dont do this near roads obviously but could if I wanted to) and stays next to me, I didnt train her to do this, its just in her nature, also smart, but not as smart as the hound in my opinion.

My lab was 10 mos when we got him and knew no words, we say he is stupid but hes actually not. He is 8 now and knows a lot of words, is housebroken etc, he just had a bad start in life and I assume no one ever spoke to him which is sad. He is the least smart of all my dogs but is so loveable, my kid dresses him up, he lays in bed with her, just very very snuggly, which again I didnt train him to do, its just in his nature. He loves people.
The other 2 loved me and our family but didnt particularky care for other people like he does.

I have two dogs, one smart (if aloof) and one that is an idiot (though loving, energetic and good natured). It's definitely not me! I think it's their respective breeds.

A smart dog needs a job. For family pets it’s better if they’re not terribly smart. They can still have emotional intelligence and they may not have a ton of verbal commands but certainly obedient enough to be a family pet, especially if you act sensibly. Socializing is just as important/successful either way.

I love smart dogs too I just think they need to live on a farm or go to work with their person.

Dumb and lazy is perfect for most families.

Beagle -- definitely stubborn and wants what she wants. Won't walk a step in any direction not of her choosing. Fiercely protective of the house. Yet wouldn't hurt a fly. A total cuddlebug.

You are right I would think "smart" would be from the human perspective,
however you are right, the smartest dogs are those who actually do their own thing
as they please when they please and give an owner a finger. Although this might
bite them at the end but still, that is smart in a dog book, be their own boss
and not take order from some inferior specie.

My one dumb dog only ever has being picked up and staking me as her territory on her mind. My other dog is too smart to pay attention to me calling her in from the yard because she knows she wants to stay out there and bark. Smart girl won’t let me put an end to her fun!

We have a French Brittney Spaniel smart as a whip.

She has been to three dog group training places and we have done private training as well.

House training no problem. Eating things besides her own food or treats no problem. No issues with other dogs coming into our house.

Taking her for a walk is a no go. Why because she gets extremely aggressive towards every other dog she sees. Even it’s a choke collar. I am not strong enough to handle my 30 pound dog when other people want their dog to play with her.

Backyard barking UGH when neighbors bring their dogs up to my fence to be friendly.

Yes I am the problem not her, she’s almost 8 and not our first dog. We have never had a dog like this.

Super smart, bird dog, who loves attention.

Someone once said "there are no stupid dogs, there are only stupid owners"
I don't know whether this is true or not but there certainly seem to be dogs
out there that seem smarter then others. I personally never had a dog that
would not reach his/her full potential and was anything less then smart and
adorable but I also communicate/interact with my dog a lot and read the
nonverbal clues of the animal so I can not tell if I am just lucky to own
smart dogs or is this a result of dog/human interactions.

What personality is your dog or dogs that you knew, did you see dogs
that were clearly smarter then their owners thought and treated them as,
resulting in animal that was in a way locked in circumstances?

Did you see dogs that were truly not smart and untrainable and
had you expertise to say so?
