Putting aside for a moment the role of social justice in the Jesuit tradition, which is unique, I’ll simply say that a school that invites Mike Pence to be commencement speaker cannot claim a deep and abiding commitment to social justice. Yes, Georgetown hosts speakers of all types, from all political backgrounds. But commencement speakers are a statement about who you are and what you value as an institution.

As an aside I just took a look at the recent commencement speakers for some of the colleges of interest to my child. Interesting angle to consider about a place, I has not considered before. That said - not sure it should not overly influence a choice of college, but it is interesting.

If your kid (and you) are lucky - a famous comedian will have graduated form the school and be invited to speak the year of their commencement.

If your kid is a rich foreign diplomat type child, go to ND. At GT they will just pal around with more of the same.

This. I think the applicant pool is very very different. Like you said, for most kids at Notre Dame they WANT to be at NOTRE DAME. They applied because it’s NOTRE DAME and all that entails. Whereas Georgetown I feel like a lot of kids are just there because DC or It’s a Highly Ranked, Good School That Will Get Me a Good Job (or grad school) — or a combination of those two things — but the actual institution of Georgetown isn’t the reason they went/applied. I don’t know if that makes sense.

Does the student want to be in DC or South Bend? That is a pretty big consideration, if you have never been there, you need to visit before making a decision.

They aren’t super similar, IMO. But I agree, both good choices. What is the intended major?

They seem very similar so I’d go with the one that was a better fit, perhaps based on student’s preferred distance from home, and cost including travel. Both good choices although ND definitely seems more Catholic.

I'd pick ND. It's higher ranked than GT and some of its programs -- particularly the business school -- are the absolute best in the country. It also has a more geographically diverse student bodies and is one of the country's few truly national universities. The campus is beautiful and the athletic program first-rate. Its endowment dwarfs Georgetown's and enables ND to fund a lot of things that GT simply cannot compete with. And you can't find a more helpful alumni network.

GT is better for some programs -- particularly foreign service -- but generally speaking ND's undergraduate programs are better.

GT is less "Catholic." ND may be too Catholic for some.

Obviously GT's location is a lot better, although the campus itself is cramped and crumbling.

Which would you choose, and why?
