Don't sleep on the footwork. it's key for defenders. In addition to the above advice, get him playing basketball.

Have you done this? If so, what was it like?

They're also doing a session in Richmond on February 8th (Saturday), with Matt Dunn, if that works better for anyone - https://1stclasslax.com/courses/richdef/

I actually wrote Deemer Class two days ago to see if they'd ever do a NoVA-based class. He said definitely yes, but they'd need to make sure they had it set up to get close to the 15 player limit. So it'd take some interest, a location (!!) etc.

My son went to a 90 minute class in December. He thought it had value. From observing it, they did a lot of footwork exercises as well as defensive positioning. DS did not need as much instruction on stickwork, so what he learned about stickwork was mostly subtle improvements.

But in addition to the coaching he'll receive in his rec league play you can look at group or private lessons (e.g., madlax, perfect performance, st. james, performance sports systems, and coachup). Local DIII or HS athletes may also be willing to give some lessons before season starts in earnest or certainly over the summmer. Many will advertise on your local rec league team websites. Tons of good video instruction for dpoles and game film also on YouTube.

How is Perfect Performance? I was considering the 10 session package with them. Thanks.

Also forgot to mention Next Level in Bethesda, which is also a good program and convenient for NOVA families. Our kids used PP in middle school primarily for speed and conditioning, as the lacrosse program was not as well developed 5-6 years ago. Wherever you go, hopefully he'll start to internalize the footwork, positioning, and stickwork required to play close defense or LSM.

My MS boy wants to transition to D and needs training on the long stick. Any suggestions for where he can get a couple lessons?
