You can think your air is dry, but if you aren’t using a hygrometer, you don’t know.

Yes, I understand, but because you *think* you have dry air, or because you want to add extra moisture during the period a kid has a cold, does not mean the air can tolerate having more moisture put into it.

OP here, thanks all. To answer q’s - it is a humidifier, blowing mist into the air. We’ve got to close the door as otherwise we would keep our son awake with our activities downstairs when we are trying to get him to sleep (small 1300 sq foot house). It isn’t a puddle as might result from a leak, but generally wet ground, like the mist is being absorbed into the carpet. I will play around with other setups and maybe by a smaller version. ThNks!

Had same problem in small, carpeted room and the solution for us is to keep the ceiling fan on low when we run the cool mist humidifier. If there's a ceiling fan in the room, try that.

Ours has never left a puddle underneath. It sounds like you have a leak or there is a problem caused by putting it on a towel/carpet. Try to find a hard surface you can bring in to the room when you need to use it (an end table? An overturned storage box?) and see if that helps. If not, buy another one and see if that’s better.

If it’s not a puddle concentrated underneath the humidifier itself but rather the carpet uniformly wet throughout the room, I’d say maybe you don’t need to run it at all or you could consider running it for an hour or two early in the night to get the humidity up and then turn it off and close the door.

I went out of town and my husband decided to buy a humidifier for our baby's room because he forgot we already had one. He ran it for 2 days and it soaked the floor, carpet, was starting to warp the hardwoods!

I went and got the one we use out of storage and no problems. Both sit on the floor. One is just crap and the other one is not. Get a different humidifier.

We also have small rooms. I bought one for small rooms at Target a few months ago. Sit it on a plastic placemat on a a slightly raised surface like a foot stool. No towel under it. Leave the door open and set it on the very lowest setting.

We have the small version of this one:

Or a towel, because it could block the air vents and cause the motor to overheat. A plastic placemat (or a cheap tray with raised sides, if you think you might have a leak) would be better.

And if it's on the floor, the cool humidified air never has a chance to circulate through the room, it just sinks to the floor. We sometimes use a TV tray-type folding table if there's nowhere in the room to put it. Higher up is better, though.

I've never had that problem with any of the models I've owned over the years, even the cheap Vicks one I bought at Target. But I've always kept it on a hard surface, high up the room.

Get a cheap humidity sensor on Amazon. If it's above 60%, don't turn on the humidfier. If it's between 40%-60% you are probably good. If it gets below 40%, turn it on again. Maybe don't use it with the door closed, or run it during the day (not at night) with the door open and/or a fan on.

Ignore the PP. You’re not doing anything wrong and your device is not a humidifier and it’s not broken. In a small room, the humidifier will overpower the size of the room and the available circulated air pretty fast. Oversaturated air will basically rain onto the floor.

You can try turning down the humidifier.

Of course you are doing something wrong! Sounds like it is broken and has a leak.

PS are you positive it’s a humidifier and not a DEhumidifier? Because the latter pulls moisture from the air into a tank...which can overflow if you don’t ever empty it.

We have run a cool mist humidifier for our son when he has a cold but even on the lowest setting, the humidifier soaks everything! We put it on a towel on the floor and come in to the carpet soaked in the morning and the towel completely soaked through. Is this just a humidifier thing? Do we have a bad one? What have others done? Unfortunately it is a very small room and we do not have a hard surface to put it on. The other option is on top of his changing pad, but that is the only surface in the room. Help!
