holy shit. This works for you? Do you carry a gun in case somebody tries to kill you for doing this?

I think crashes will decrease as adaptive cruise control and crash alert systems become standard in cars, which I think is probably at most 5-10 years from now.

If you don't have those features in your car, you just have to be careful. Of course, accidents can still happen and OP shouldn't be so judgmental.

Yes, it IS someone's fault. Everyone tailgating, and everyone who cuts back over in front of someone, thus decreasing the following distance of the person behind them.

They are the ones at fault. All of them. And you too, if you're either one of these types.

Have you ever driven that stretch of road in Pa? I have and there is just no room for error. I hate any road that goes through the Pa mountains. My husband and I do everything we can to avoid them. We just missed a huge rock slide one night. We've driven through them in heavy fog and rain and it is terrifying.

This. My car has a sort of self-driving mode and it will maintain a safe distance when I enable cruise on highways. Of course, cars keep lane changing into the safe gap I leave in front of me...

This. I pretty much always use my adaptive cruise control when driving at speed on the highway, but plenty of cars jump in my safe distance and my car slows down. I have thought that if more people used this feature, the roads would probably be safer.

On a related note, I know someone who was at a red light and rear ended at full speed. Most likely the guy was on the phone, but I assume if his vehicle had automatic braking like mine does, his vehicle would at least have slowed down before hitting the stopped car in front of him. Self driving cars have to be an improvement given how many people look at their phone while driving.

You can leave space in front of you, but if there's a FedEx truck following you at speed when the bus flips, it won't make a bit of difference.

I had a friend involved in a chain reaction accident. She had plenty of time to stop when she saw what was happening -- then she was rear-ended and shoved right into the carnage. (She was fine, but her car was totaled).

It can happen to you, DCUM. Quit trying to blame the victims and think you're immune from tragedy.

Based on the time of night it occurred (3am wasn't it?) and the weather conditions, my guess is there was black ice on the road and each car that turned the corner on the pile-up coudln't stop.

At that time of night, there's not much traffic so not tailgating either. I've driven that road a lot.
