Tips

If the charity sells your car sells for $500 or less, you can deduct $500 or your car’s fair market value, whichever is less. For example, if your car is valued at $650 but sells for $350, you can deduct $500.

We donated a car to the fire station for training. Jaws of life etc.

If you donate it,and itemize your taxes, donate to an organization that will use it as a car..like a fire department or hs shop class. Then you can take the blue book. If you donate it to a non profit that will sell it you only get what they sold it for.

I've been in your boat! Check Craigslist to see what similar models are going for. If it runs and will get through the safety inspection (brakes, tires, etc all good), it should be worth $500. People need cheap wheels. At this price level, Craigslist is a good option.

Brandywine runs some yards in PG County and they will give it a look. I sold one to Nico Buys Cars and one to We Buy Any Car - they pay what you see online. So sad!

I'm ready to get rid of my 1997 car with 200k miles. It's a salvage title and has dents and is dirty, but still runs and seems safe. When I do the online calculators it says it's only worth like $150. It seems like the metal alone should be worth more than that. Any suggestions on what to do with it in DC? I was thinking I might be able to get more like $500.
