Wow, what a rip off! Where was this?

Doesn't sound out of line to me, especially since we don't know if it was front AND back, or just one set, or if rotors were replaced or not. Not to mention what the "other minor stuff" might have been.

Ouch.

That's about a $150 job if you do it yourself. Takes about 2 hours for everything.

I look at it like I'm earning $325 an hour, for a couple hours.

My uncle used to own a repair shop and the only job he wouldn't do is brakes. The reason is insurance costs were too high. If you mess up on a brake job, the consequences can be pretty bad.

I believe you misheard him, because auto mechanics repair and replace brakes as a matter of course. And if you do your own brakes, it's not like you're going to sue yourself after an accident!

That's really odd. Brakes are bread and butter for auto mechanics. You really can't "mess up" a brake job if you put all the parts back where you found them. I've never heard of a shop that wouldn't do brakes.

Who will do a visual brake inspection? No charge.

Need to know the make/model of the car, it varies considerably for luxury andvhigh performance cars compared to regular cars.

I have a Toyota Avalon, I do the brakes myself, costs me about $120 for pads only, maybe $250 if I need new front rotors.

My wife has a Porsche Cayenne Turbo S. Only the dealer can service the brakes, and a full brake job was over $4,000 at 65,000 miles.

Needless to say, I'm not a fan of the Cayenne.... but she needs a "prestige" car for work.

What is the average cost for new brakes?
