Is it possible to double major in commercial dance and something completely unrelated? My DD is interested in the Commercial Dance Program, but I won't pay for a dance degree unless she combines it with a more practical major.

Can you explain Commercial Dance to me, from a dance candidate's perspective (I know I can google it, but rather have your perspective)? TIA.

It's more geared to the type of work a dancer would get on the west coast coast, such as dancing in videos or being a back up dancer on tour, possibly cruise ships, etc. Most college dance programs are geared for dancers who plan on joining a dance company and oddly enough they are Modern based instead of ballet. I find it odd, because there are very few modern dance companies that exist as opposed to ballet, but for some reason college dance programs focus on modern dance even though modern dance is rarely performed.

Thanks for the responses. Will look closer at Fordham and hunter. Didn’t love the lack of campus feel of the new school.

Positively the best regional uni in NYC is Fordham. Fordham has everything that Pace has x 1000.

I know some theater kids at Pace who love it. What is your kid interested in? My kid is trying for NYU but assuming he can't get in there, he is applying to New School - which actually we loved on the tour.

Maybe he could try New School? It’s cheaper, less selective and just a few blocks away.

Commercial dance and a college degree. That program is selective.

Why? 3,000 colleges out there. So many better choices.

I can’t think of any reason to go to a school like Pace over a state school.

At one time, a not-bad accounting school with a placement pipeline to NYC financials. Completely eclipsed by higher-level public b-schools. Very little housing. Largest campus now in more remote suburbs, so you get neither a NYC experience nor a name-brand. I’d pass.
