Our school says send them as long as they don't have a fever. They also don't send kids home very often, even if your child is sick. Its pretty frustrating. Mines been out two out of four weeks sick and still sick and they will not allow my child to make up the work so his grades will take a huge hit this semester.

People can be contagious before and after they’re actually symptomatic.

I'm probably one of those posters. Both of my kids have runny noses from November - May. I don't get it. They never get sicker either. We've been to the pediatrician about it so many times. My dad is a type 1 diabetic so he gets sick nearly every time he visits (I do bleach every thing down in preparation and am a clean person myself). He says it's worth it though to see my kids. He seems to be the only one who gets sick, but I think that's because he has a lesser immune system.

One time my DD was on her way to a birthday party and she threw up. It wasn't unusual- she did sometimes get car sick because she's rear facing. I cleaned her up (including hand washing) and didn't think any thing about it because she seemed very healthy, no fever, and wasn't sick the morning before. She was fine the entire party and was smiling. Later that night she started violently throwing up for hours. Pretty sure we gave everyone norovirus or something at that birthday party. It was miserable. DH and I were both incredibly sick too. Totally felt terrible about that one...

I know a mom like this. I was their nanny and one of the kids was vomiting so I let the preschool teacher know we wouldn’t be there the next day. It was a co-op and it was our day to volunteer so I wanted to make sure there was time to find someone else. The mom was really angry because she wanted the kids to go to school anyway and told me not to do that again. She sent the kids sick regularly. So ridiculous since she had me and there was zero reason to contaminate everyone else. She was a selfish bi$ch on a lot of other ways too. My guess is the parents who send their kids to school sick (and have other options) probably mostly are selfish in other ways too.

I always wonder how elementary teachers don’t lose their cool over this. I see it all the time.

I feel you, OP. There are a few repeat offenders at my kid’s school. They have shown themselves to be selfish and clueless in other ways too. Honestly, parents, nobody thinks you didn’t know your kid had a fever when you dropped him off.

You know, sometimes kids are contagious before you realize they're sick. My sister came to Thanksgiving dinner with my niece and nephew and they seemed fine and all the kids played together. They seemed 100% normal. At 2 am my nephew started throwing up and at 5 am my niece started. Sister packed them in the car and left on a 4-hour drive home with barfing kids, bless her, but everyone was exposed and it was hardly intentional. Fortunately only two other kids (of five) got sick. But any of them could have.

Strep is contagious and the symptoms are not always obvious. My 5 year old has had it 3 times and only once did we actually suspect it was strep. Twice he had no fever or other symptoms -- it was diagnosed because we happened to be at the doctor for something else.

Illness happens. It sucks to be sick, especially at the holidays, but unless you see a parent tell their kid "now I know you're sick, don't vomit over Johnny" and walk out, you can't say for sure where anything was picked up. It happens to all of us and you just have to deal.

People are selfish.

Your immune compromised friends don’t feel the same way. It’s often a matter of life and death or at least hospitalization.

They invited my child over knowing one of their kids was sick and not yet treated. And sent both kids to school all week when they both had strep. No waiting the 24 hr period for drugs to kick in.

And I have full time childcare help so I don’t say this as someone who has to send ill children to school. Just a realist.

I am in the nail salon right now and the woman in the seat next to me is coughing all over the nail technician and telling her how sick she is and how she needs to get better before she gets on the plane. I am sure we are all now going to be sick along with her whole flight! Why doesn’t she stay home until she gets better!

We get to spend today and tomorrow at urgent care getting treated for strep and I’m sure we’ll all still feel terrible by Christmas. You know who you are. You’re selfish and I’m just so angry because you do this ALL THE TIME and now we can’t do many of our cherished holiday things. F u guys.
