0-3 in a crib with a traditionally decorated nursery
3-9/10 moved into a different room with hand me down furniture from others and curtains I made and a bedding refresh
9/10-16 New furniture, paint, closet overhaul
16 - changed rooms again, new paint, new furniture (sold some of the old stuff), kept some old stuff and recycled some stuff too.

Subject: When and how often do you update your child's room?
Kids got basic IKEA beds and dressers when they got their beds. One has a twin and one has a full based on the size of their rooms. They will keep this furniture until it breaks or until they hopefully take it to their first apartment. We change paint every few years when they ask. DD does and changes out decorations when she feels like it. DS doesn’t seem to care and has the same posters hung up from when he was in elementary school. He never hangs out in his bedroom with friends.

We did a full update in 5th grade including paint, bedding and decor. Kept the actual furniture. I expect to do one more update maybe around 9th grade, at which time I may offer a larger bed (currently a single, which she prefers because it gives her room the most space.)

when she started kindergarten and then again when she was 14. aside from going from crib to an actual bed, the furniture has stayed the same -- just changed the wall colors, decor, comforter, curtains, etc.

My kid went from convertible bed to a queen when he was about 10. He had been a jumper, so the old mattress and box spring were trashed. Decided to move up to the queen so it could serve as an adult bed/guest bed when needed.

When she was 3, then when she was 12. Didn't update furniture (except gave a bed rather than a crib).

0-2, crib/nursery
2-10, twin trundle (for sleep overs) and themes (space, jungle, etc)
10- college, queen beds and paint (no themes, just colors (blue for one and purple for the other).
Same furniture except for beds (low dresser that doubled as a changing table when little), tall dresser, nightstand.

When my kid was finally watertight, we bought a decent twin mattress and a captain's bed. He was probably 5. I swapped out the rocket sheets for something more mature when he became a tween.
He is home for college and still sleeping in that same bed.

Ha! My kid went from a crib to a queen bed at age 18 months!
We have a regular dresser in there and we will probably use the same furniture items until he’s off to college. (Obviously assuming nothing breaks.)

My 9 year old has the PB Kids set she got at age 4. I’ve been thinking of letting her update her decor but hope the furniture lasts through HS!

We updated it to a big kid room at age 9. We had bought adult furniture early on so it was fine. We upgraded to a full bed around age 7. I would get a bigger bed and new furniture if its too young/not his style at this point. You don' have to get expensive. A lot of families we know did it around 9/10.

DS is in MS and while the decorations have changed out numerous times he's still in "big kid" bed he got when he was 4 or 5. It's a regular twin bed from Pottery Barn so it's a decent bed and he has plenty of room. His bookshelf and dresser are also from that same time. The stuff is cute and more for a child than a teen who wants a hang out room. But if they are in okay shape should I expect to have him keep that furniture until he goes off to college or do you usually think about a big update around this time to take him through the teen years? Is it too soon and should I wait?
