Sounds like a total mess according to the What Happened section of the article. From the control center to the train operator none of the involved parties appear to be adequately trained or supervised, putting riders and employees at risk. Sounds like a culture problem that starts at the top.

Omg I would have been freaking OUT if I was stuck on the dark train for an hour rolling backwards at 2 MPH smelling smoke.

Number of road deaths in the greater Washington area in 2018: 290

Number of deaths on Metro in 2018: 0.

I'd much rather go in a blinding flash on 495, than sloowwwwly suffocated by smoke in a dark Metro car with 80 other people.

Well, good news, then. It's far, far, far more likely that you will do that just that.

Not quite a fair comparison. Greater Washington area carries more people over more miles.

I agree that "Metro kills almost nobody, compared to roads, which kill and maim large numbers of people year after year after year" is not the highest standard.

But really. If there's something we're all going to die on, it ain't Metro.

Nonetheless, that is a frightening and disappointing story. Multiple failures of critical safety issues, putting both passengers and employees at risk.
