At Leesburg Football Club we have a more open and transparent system than many other clubs, including having individual volunteer treasurers. At no time have we had any irregularities happen at the team or club management levels.

Central to our mission, LFC ensures – as we have for 21 years - that our teams, and the club, are run at the highest ethical standard. We will continue to monitor events and take all necessary steps. LFC will always place our players and families first."

Guessing he moved his team's $ from ODFC to LFC accounts when they switched clubs and the money parents paid in followed the players to the new club. So, he may look like the bad guy but in reality may not be.

Volunteer Treasurers. That’s crazy. We pay directly to the club.

The only time we pay a parent or team manager is for parties, or winter futsal as our club is not involved in that at all.

That might typically be the case, but there are clubs out there - even some that are reasonably large - where the team treasurers (parents) collect ALL of the money and pay the club/coach their portion and manage the entire pot of money. And there are some clubs where the club manages all of it (which is probably the best way to handle it).

There is a treasurer in all of these clubs that has access to all of the funds.

Loudoun County, VA (December 18, 2019): An Aldie couple has been charged with embezzling over $50,000 from a Loudoun-based youth soccer club.

Jeffrey J. Kern, 40, was hired by the Old Dominion Football Club (Old Dominion F.C.) as a coach for multiple travel teams. As part of his position, he had access to each team’s bank accounts. His wife, Berkeley C. Kern, 46, volunteered with the club and was an authorized user of one of the accounts.

Irregularities in the accounts were discovered by the club and led to an investigation conducted by the Loudoun County Sheriff’s Office Financial Crimes Unit. Through the course of the investigation, it was determined the couple accessed monies in the accounts on multiple occasions for personal use between 2015 and December 2018.

The couple turned themselves over to authorities on Thursday. Jeffrey Kern was charged with five counts of embezzlement and Berkeley Kern was charged with two counts of embezzlement.

They were both released from the Loudoun County Adult Detention Center on a bond.

Honestly surprised Andy Vera wasn't brought in along with them.

And PTAs. I kept a close eye on our grossly incompetent Treasurer in recent years because I wondered whether it might be something more sinister. Turns out it was just incompetence, but I did flag some loopholes she could have used to line her own nest, had she wished to do so. They are now closed.

Sadly, this happens. You frequently have basically volunteer organizations loosely managed handling millions of dollars US with nothing more than Quicken. But it's not just soccer--girl scouts cookie money, charitable donation drives, other sports.
