They really are exceptional. They have to be ripe. I used to find deals after the holidays for $20/box shipped for about 9. Totally worth it.

I'm a food snob and 99% organic fruit buyer but have to say when we've been given them (or more usual had them at relatives) they are exceptionally good. I have gotten comice locally (MOMS usually will have them for a few weeks) but not the same. That said-I bought a couple dozen pears right before Thanksgiving of all colors and varieties and some of those ripened to perfection-my theory being I had so many we didn't eat too soon.

I have bought fresh exotic tropical fruits at times because I have craved the taste of it here. Alphonso and Gir Kesar mangos from India and strawberry papaya from Hawaii. They have been worth it each time!

I am still in search of good quality fresh guavas, litchis, custard apple and wood apples (bael).

I always roll my eyes at them, like, really? You got me half a dozen pears? But without fail those pears and damn good and then I'm left wishing someone else would have sent me half a dozen pears!

They really are exceptionally good. In fact normally we get a box as a gift but haven't received it yet this year and I'm disappointed!

I've gotten them as gifted and they were the best pears I have eaten. Have gotten them at WF and were not as good, but may be a fluke.

They're Comice pears. You can get them at the grocery (esp. WF) this time of year.

Just FYI- when I was at TJ’s last week they had a Harry and David pear and cheese gift box for $7.99.

My guess is, you are the pears before it ripened, it’s self explanatory if you tried one in its peak.

I think you really have to enjoy a perfectly ripe, juicy pear. They are phenomenal!

Someone gave me some last year and it was truly the best pear I’ve ever had (and being from Oregon I’ve had a lot of pears.) I looking into ordering some this year but simply can’t justify $5 for a piece of fruit, no matter how good it is.

I’ve only received them once but I thought they were absolutely extraordinary.

Why are they so expensive? Like is it a rare "type/breed" or are they grown under certain conditions? I realize all delivery fruit is expensive but these pears are especially so. I had one today at the office and it was good and looked pretty in the gold foil but it wasn't really extraordinary. Just curious if there is a behind the scenes background story to them.
