It depends on the car. Google and do your research.

This is part of my research!

Get quotes via email and leverage them against each other. Keep asking "Are you willing to go lower?"

Yes but you need to figure out what is the lowest price.

I said I was considering financing and then negotiated the price. The finance terms were lousy so I just wrote a personal check. I’m sure they did a quick credit check but I was out of the dealership in an hour with the new car.

Name the dealership. Pressure tactics and fake fees are never appropriate!

Bank check.

And never disclose how you are paying for it until you get the price.

Bank check. We just bought a car with cash. The dealer was very shady and ran our credit without our permission. A bank check gives them secure money. They get kickbacks and money for financing so they don't want you to pay cash and that's why they gave you a run around. I never discuss payment too. Negotiate the deal via email to get the best price and then walk in with a bank check for the amount agreed. You don't fill out financing forms.

We transferred money into checking account and wrote a personal check. No problems. Also purchased a Honda

This has not been my experience at all. I never say how I am paying until the deal is fully negotiated and they never ask.

Yes, OP you need a personal check. Also, most dealerships will let you put some on a CC, the amount varies by dealership. We always put the maximum we can on the card (cash back) and then right a personal check for the rest. But we always know we are buying a car and plan accordingly.

If you write them a personal check and expect to be able to drive the car away that day, expect them to also ask you to sign a credit application/agreement, just in case. It is a customary practice.

If you don't agree to that, bring actual cash, certified funds, or leave the check with them and come back a few days later to pick up the car.

Negotiate the price before over email (plenty of threads on this). Get the "out the door" price. Show up with a certified check in that amount. Done and done.

Also don't go back to the dealership with poor customer service. You can include them in the negotiating rounds in case they give you a good offer, but use it to get someone else to price match. That behavior shouldn't be rewarded with repeat business.

I had a terrible experience last time I paid cash for a car (a Honda). We didn't plan on buying a car, so the cash was in my online checking account, but not my personal checking. I figured I could transfer the money or write an echeck. Nope, they would only take a personal check. The dealership was pissed they had to wait 3 days then to get the money and made me pre fill out all of these financing forms. I paid after 3 days. On day 7 they put me in financing and I was charged all sorts of fees and got a nasty phone call from the manager of the Honda dealership. He wasn't even sorry when I said I had paid and the money left my checking account and he saw the check had cleared.

Anyways, is that usual? We're car shopping now and I want to be ready in case (but we also might not buy for 6 months). Don't most dealership allow for transferred funds? Or was my Honda experience the norm? We're looking at a Jeep if it makes any difference.
