OP is right— Post, Vanderbilt, and other traditional etiquette experts advise against putting your coat on your chair. But these days it’s practically unavoidable. Best you can do is ask the host at the door for a coat check.

If you are afraid your coat will trail on the floor, you take off your coat, fold in half lengthwise, and put it over the back of the chair, so that half of it is between you and the chair back, and the other half hanging behind. Tuck the belt ends in the pockets.

If the coat is short enough not to trail anywhere, you can just hang it on the chair back in the normal way, so that you don't have a bulge behind your back.

Is a knee length coat necessary?

Are you driving? If so, could you leave your coat in the car?

Wear a Melania-esque coat and don't take it off?

Well, it’s above the knee. I guess mid-thigh. It’s wool and my best option for business. I don’t pay attention to Melania (hence why I’m asking fashion questions on an anonymous board).

Back of the chair seems like the best option, I just didn’t know if that seems like a faux pas.

Most restaurants have some option, even if it’s under utilized—hooks, a rack somewhere. Coats on chairs are more a nuisance for the waitstaff moving the room, than a faux pas.

I’m attending a luncheon in a nicer/casual restaurant (non-chain). I doubt there will be a coat room. Where do I put my knee-length coat???
