A subscription to Ipsy might be well received - you fill out a form about interests and they send a little cosmetics bag of small, but not sample-small, products each month. My 13-yo loves it!

You could YouTube and find the popular brands with kids. Honestly mine would never have wanted Clinique. They view that as old peoples make up. Mine love the crazy colors. A favorite is the James Charles Morphe palette. They also love good make up brushes and those spongy things.

I started with Clinique at 13.

Clinique lasts forever. Go with quality as its going on her face. She doesn't need tons at 12, just one of each.

I would go to Sephora and look for a palette that contains coordinated colors for eyes, cheeks, and lips. It's hard when you're just starting out to know how to combine colors, and these kits do that for you. I'd take a picture of her along so that the sales person can help you select one that will work for her coloring. I'd also ask for their recommendation for a mascara since that's something almost everyone who wears makeup uses.

I suggest getting her a gift card to Ulta and taking her, maybe get a hot chocolate and make an outing out of it. She may have opinions you’re not aware of and plus if you’re buying foundation/concealer you really need her skin there to test it on.

The popular makeup and skin care brands with tweens and teens are Glossier, Mario Badescu, Fenty, Milk Makeup, and ColourPop. ColourPop is pretty affordable, the rest are mid-range.

They love Glossier.

And fwiw, I'd have her start with skin care, before starting with makeup.

Glossier is popular with young girls and also very subtle. Price point is similar to clinique

Should I buy a hypoallergenic brand like Clinique? She only wears for special occasions but I thought I would get blush, mascara, light lip color and maybe eyeliner. Oh, and a few eyeshadow colors. This is mostly for fun, so she can play around and learn how to use it.
