When they are old enough to agree with their friends that they want to exchange gifts. Keep it simple.

When I was a kid, I exchanged homemade gifts with my friends. I used fabric scraps and made them stuffed animals.

My son started last year, with the exception of one friend he’s given to for years. He was 12 last year. This year he is using his own money.

When they are toddlers, we started making “gifts” (cards, maybe a picture or two) for anyone they love. Starts with parents, siblings, grandparents. Up to the child about who else to include and when.

Just curious, as I know my kindergartener would love to do this. He hasn't asked, but I know he would enjoy giving gifts to his friends.
