Right, and that's YOU giving a gift--you as the gift giver, which is not the situation. OP is not worried about the gift giver (her kid). OP, and her kid, is worried about making the recipient feel awkward. Many people DO feel awkward if they get a gift and don't have one to give back.

OP, I've got 15 and 17 y.o. DDs. Something from BeautyCounter (charcoal mask or lipstick), Lush soap is always good, Sephora, Starbucks card.

If she isn’t sure they are giving gifts:

A cute ornament
Little bag of treats/candy. Could be anything from homemade cookies to fancy candy from Lolli and Pops. Cute bag and you’re done

Cute mug and Starbucks gift card inside, maybe a cookie too.

I think all the suggestions here are good. Now is a good time to double down on, it’s better to give than receive. Also, to avoid embarrassment and such, why not have your daughter ask her friends if they want to do a gift exchange or something like secret Santa?

Fuzzy socks or mittens or hat, bath bombs, candle, Starbucks gift card. I think a water bottle is too big of a gift if you are worried about that.

My DDs always struggle with this, too. Something from lush or fuzzy socks.

Oh come on! The girl is 13. Of course it would’ve embarrassing to get your friend a big present and not get anything in return. Sometimes I feel like people are intentionally obtuse.

OP, this depends on your daughter likes... What is she into? My kids are younger so I’m not well versed in what’s popular with older kids. As long as she keeps it small - bath bombs, slime, water bottle, whatever they like - just a small thinking of you gift.

DD is 13 and this is the first year she has suggested she wants to get some little gifts for friends.

What can we get that is small and not too embarrassing if they don't think of getting her something?
