I would do day trips to Baltimore and Richmond. If I were solo, maybe a trip to Pennsylvania for a few days. I did that solo with kids similar in age during the summer and it was a great time.
Where did you go in Pennsylvania? We'll be up there visiting family over the holidays so could wrap a couple days onto the end of the visit for fun stuff.
