I went through it twice, once for my own license and again when my older kid got a learners permit. Both times I saw multiple adults turned away because they didn’t have the right combination of documents. No way would I risk a long wait in line only to find my kid hadn’t fully understood what was needed (plus, in my house at least, important documents like birth certificates and SS cards are in a locked fireproof box for safety so my kid would have to involve me anyway to get them).

What kind of idiot parent would leave something like this (legal documents, etc.) up to a 15 yr. old?

First of all the website was designed for idiots— it does everything but literally hold your hand.

Second, if your kid can’t do this then are they ready to be behind the wheel of a large automobile?

So you needed to be told to click “continue” on the DMV website? Honestly if that was truly the issue you should at least have said I checked their website and found it confusing.

Click on "continue" at the bottom of that page, and the system will actually walk you through all of the documents you need. My advice is bring all of that, and one or two extra items because the worst thing would be to have DMV not accept something and you don't have a back up after waiting all that time in line. Basically you need your child's birth certificate, social security card, your own license/ID to prove residency, maybe one or two other things.

There will be a vision test and a two part computer-based written test. The first part of the written text is on traffic signs and your DC will need to score 100% on that part. The other part is general knowledge and a passing score is 80%. If your DC fails either part, you have to wait 15 days before trying again.

In Virginia, sorry. Not sure which one we are going to yet but this is for his permit. We would go to Sterling, Tysons or Fairoaks.

REAL ID requires more docs. The MD DMV I know has an interactive website that tells you exactly what you need.

I'm not finding much info online and the 200+ operators are busy at DMV. What documents do I need to bring besides my DS's SSN card? What should we expect - will he be doing a vision test and a written test? Anything else that we need to do? How long does this process take if there isn't a line (in a perfect world)?
