Yup. I'm on maternity leave right now. It will be nice for others and I don't begrudge it to them, but it will be bitterly disappointing to use up all of my sick and annual leave, take a 10% pay cut for the year due to unpaid FMLA (I've only been a fed instead of a contractor for 1.5 years), and miss paid leave by a hair. Like, that's such a huge cost i would probably have waited a year to get pregnant if I'd known.


You do sound very bitter, yes.

This says the house version states that it would only be available for births after 9/1/2020.

Even though I'm hopeful this will go through, I wouldn't recommend anyone currently pregnant or planning to be in the next year+ to take advantage of this. If you get to, huge bonus, but please have a plan in place if not!

I'm not sure this would actually be the case. Obviously, this would depend on the language in the bill, but this is spending authorization bill, and the money for spending is for next year I believe? But I could be wrong.

Hmmm, if it's several months later, you may be able to. under FMLA - the current 12 week unpaid leave law, you can take 12 weeks unpaid at any point in the year after your child is born. But you might have to take it all at once? I'm not sure you could take it intermittently, if that makes sense?

If it's a part of the FY21 legislation, then it should have an enactment date included in the Bill. I haven't seen the language anywhere, but in my experience, most legislation takes over a year to implement - so if you're pregnant now it probably won't help you this round. . .

Does anyone know when the paid parental leave for federal employees (if it passes, of course) would be available? I’m wondering if it would take effect immediately or there is a delay planned in implementing it. I’m guessing some of you may be in the loop on this? I’ve googled it, but I’m not finding anything about the tentative start date, if passed.
