That would never work in MCPS.

I'm not sure this makes much of a difference. I'm assuming that the kids who failed last year were eventually promoted and they would have been tested. It's not like they're piling up poor performers in 3rd grade forever; at some point they go to 4th+ where they will get tested.

And my kids are doing great in MCPS.

Why? Because everyone in Mississippi is racist?

I’m not White either, but you’re ridiculous.

Why not?

Why do we keep letting kids go on to the next grade when it is clear that they have not mastered grade level work??

There is a large and strong research base demonstrating consistent negative effects on kids who are retained.

Well, there seems to be some largely negative effects on kids who are pushed through without actually mastering grade level work. What MCPS is doing now isn’t working.

This is why nearly half of our kids are underperforming in reading in MCPS. Not to mention the kids who have dyslexia are suffering in our schools: phonics is essential for them but good for all. The Friedman's lawsuit plus Decoding Dyslexia's great work at the state level to force change in the county will hopefully change this in the next thirty years. (yeah, it will probably be that slow)

There absolutely is phonics based reading instruction in MCPS elementary schools.

Current over crowding. School in moco isn’t about education, it’s about moving kids through.

The article states that there is a disparate impact in poor areas which in MS tend to be black. Could you even imagine if a BOE member suggested this? There would be calls for his/her resignation.

I hate saying this, I am a bit distrusting. Has it been verified that the scores weren't changed like Atlanta? If MS has consistent gains, then I will go demand MCPS to do whatever it is MS is doing.

So MCPS isn’t teaching decoding and language comprehension in the early grades?

I don’t know....my kid was new here in middle school.

More evidence that when a system follows good cognitive research, good things happen. Will MCPS leaders please start focusing on things that can make a difference for our kids.
