We've had to miss a lot more school than that for visa interviews in our home country - the sort of appointment you cannot miss. So yes, your child will be fine. Just make sure to communicate with the teachers ahead of time and show goodwill by asking for homework in advance.

My DD missed two days in a row....twice....for illness early in 6th grade. Similar in that she was new to MS, had 7 classes, school work to make up. It was fine, she made up the work, still did well on her report card.

For a once in a lifetime event? I'd definitely do it.

2 days no biggie. A full week I might not do but 2 days? Fine

It’s two days, in 5th grade. Don’t overthink it. Some teachers will cooperate, some won’t. This is not a reason to miss an important family event.

This is another issue. There are 5 blocks/5 teachers a day.

FYI, they may not let her make up the work if it's not considered excused. This is not a reason not to do it, just something to bear in mind.

looking back, it is also easier to miss 2 days of middle school then 2 days of high school in term of catching up IMO.

They spend thousands of days of their lives in a classroom but significant learning comes form other experiences. Figure out a way to catch up from the missed school work when other important life events interfere.

That interference often comes from negatives like illness or maybe the passing of a relative, but sometimes they can and should come from positive opportunities like travel or exposure to some other special and educational experience.

DD will be starting a new intermediate 5-6 school next year, for 5th. Apparently it’s quite the adjustment, not only in workload, but also because they have blocks and are learning to move around the school to different classrooms.

A once in a lifetime event has presented itself, and it’s something that’s special to our family. For us to attend, it would involve having to pull DD from school the Thursday and Friday of the first week of October. She’s a great student, but average, and I worry about the workload and her falling behind/not understanding something that was taught. Will she really miss much in two days in 5th grade? It’s a decision I need to make now, not knowing anything about what 5th grade will be like. Of course I understand the onus is on us to catch her back up with any missed work, and not on the teacher. I in no way plan on making the teacher make special arrangements, just to be clear. Thank you!
