+1. We have lots of friends in that area who love living there. The trade off with any neighborhood is that the more urban it is, the less kid friendly.

Once you have kids, you just need some family friendly places to go and maybe a couple date night spots. We used to live in the U ST/ Logan neighborhood and while it was fun, we couldn't let our kids roam the neighborhood with their friends the way they do here in UNW. It doesn't matter with really little kids because no one is sending their toddler out and about unsupervised, but it matters once they're a couple years older.

Pick one with good schools so your kids will go to school with neighborhood kids and they can walk to and from school together. You don't mention budget, but you could look into Bethesda, Friendship Heights (neighborhoods on MD and DC sides), Tenleytown, and Shepherd Park (not too far from Silver Spring metro).

If you're willing to have a longer walk or bus ride to the metro, then it expands your searches. The quieter, safer neighborhoods where kids roam free tend to not be right near the metro. We're in Shepherd Park and moved here for the very reasons you're looking for. We love it so far and the kids have made lots of friends to run around with.

Capitol Hill. Lots of kids walking home from Union Station or Eastern Market in the afternoons, stopping for drinks/snacks, playing pickup baseball/basketball at the parks. I know because that's what my kids do. (They're middle schoolers.)

There are lots of pockets where people have a feeling of community but places close in are often the most expensive and have 2 spouses WOH and not so much kids roaming house to house in the afternoon. (Plus many of them have a mix of public/private school).

We are looking for something with a neighborhood-y feel -- like neighborhood kids play together and such. We'd prefer something on the red line and in the District (have been looking at places in Woodley and Tenley), but would love to hear about any close-in suburbs or areas that are easy metro access and where people have some feeling of community.
