Come on OP. Do the math. You're driving 10 hours and you're at 40%. If my math is right, that would mean you only get to drive for 25 hours before each oil change.

The Oil Change light is on a timer and has nothing to do with the actual oil level (it's not that smart). It also favors the dealership and oil change centers by convincing people to change their oil more often. The 3000 mile recommendation is completely false...it's more like 6000 miles. I have always just reset the gauge and wait for it to go down twice before getting an oil change.

This—you have no idea if the previous owner just reset the light when it came on. Better to have a fresh start.

Even if you reset it, it comes on every time you start the car until it's changed. While it could be a good idea to get the oil changed for a piece of mind, it's not necessary at 40%

I have a 2015 CR-V that I bought this summer. The light definitely comes on at 15% and will show via a little wrench as well as a clear sign that says "oil life 15%". Mine came on just before a roundtrip to Pennsylvania (about 275 miles each way) and I was fine when I got home (still says 15%). I'll have time to get an oil change this weekend. You'll be fine.

I would definitely change it. You don't know how long it's been sitting on the lot. Why chance it especially before a long drive.

in that case, check to make sure you have enough oil. it should be clean enough but you don't want to drive w/ low oil.

Unless the car has been sitting forever, no. If your oil change interval is 5000, that means you’ve got 2000 miles to the next one.

Do you know how to check the oil to see if you need more? A 2016 shouldn’t need topping off.

Hi there, I have a 2016 CRV. My oil life is at 40%. I'm about to drive to West Virginia for the holidays; 5 hours there, 5 hours back.

Should I go get the oil changed/topped off before I travel?
