I flat out forgot about a kid party once. Just plain forgot.

I apologized to the mom as soon as I realized, and gave the kid her gift.

Only time it ever happened (three DC).

Once when the kids were little a pet escaped, we were searching frantically, found the pet, and in the panic and relief afterward, forgot about the party completely. Stuff happens.

I once showed up to a party the Saturday before.

I was flaky at the time, actually in the midst of a nervous breakdown.

You never know what is going on in other people’s lives.

I've gotten the time mixed up. I was juggling various things that day, got the times mixed up, felt so embarassed and just kinda flew under the radar about it.

There’s a lot of reasonable excuses. Are they likely? Maybe, maybe not.

+1. Sick is always a likely one, and if it's the parent(s) that was sick, that might explain the delay in reaching out to you as of yet. I think if you don't receive any news within a few days, the mom flaked.

I'm a stickler about RSVPing and showing up to what I said I would.

The only time I skipped out on a child's birthday party was when my child (then around 4-5) had a massive meltdown and we could not calm her for over an hour (she is a bit on the spectrum). The party had already started. So, we did not go. I emailed the mother, but I did not know the her at all so did not divulge the truth. So I just said sorry we couldn't make it. She didn't write back, which I understand.

We were never invited again, which I also understand. Maybe I could have handled it better in hindsight, but I was frazzled and was doing the best I could at that time. Years later, I still feel bad about missing that party and how it probably made the mother and her child feel.

Why are you assuming the worst? Take action, don't sit and get worked up in online conversation.

Send a text and say something like, "We missed you yesterday! Hope everything is ok."

See what you get. It is really not that hard.

She sucks, that’s why.

She’s probably flakey and forgot.

People who do this are very very rude. It’s that simple.

Whenever I’ve had to cancel because my kid was sick, I’ve always texted the host to let them know.

Forgot.

Why? We had a parent do this yesterday. She texted me to RSVP a few days ago, said they’d be happy to attend, asked what my child wanted as a gift, etc. Then, just didn’t show up! No call, no text. If you do this, why?
