Our oldest kids are two boys & when I was pregnant with #3, I didn’t want to know the sex & DH did. I left the room and let the sonographer tell him because I felt it was his kid too so he should be able to find out if he wants. I made him swear not to tell me.

He looked shell shocked coming out of the room and that was my 1st clue. Then he kept pestering me to let him tell me, and I finally caved after a week. (Of course you know where this is going, #3 is a girl).

My husband didn't want to know, but it was our final child and I was dying to know. We had two older boys, and I really wanted to decorate the nursery.

I called the ultrasound tech after my appointment and asked quietly. I never told a soul that I knew...until today. She will be 14 on Saturday.

I didn't decorate until I had her, but I had it all planned out on my work computer and had everything set up within a week or two.

I kind of agree, unless you don't talk at all about the pregnancy. I don't see how it wouldn't either come out or make everything really strange. Imagine setting up a registry and you're picking out gender neutral stuff and watching your spouse like a hawk to see what kind of clothes they're looking at in Buy Buy Baby. Even picking names - if you're the person who doesn't know, you're totally getting played when your spouse tells you that they don't really like your girl's name but they can deal with it, and then insists on their boy's name for fairness. They know there's a penis in there!

Once I found out the sex of both of my kids, I started thinking of them, and referring to them, as he and she. I think it would be really easy to slip, so my advice would be for parents to either both find out, or neither does.

My DH wanted to find out and I didn't, but it wasn't really important to him so he waited. I was talking about if we have another, I'd let him win that argument this time and find out (as I was packing up clothes DD has outgrown, in the context of knowing what to keep/give away if we have another) and he surprised me by saying he wouldn't want to find out again, and that seeing our daughter for the first time and telling me we had a girl was one of the best moments of his life.
