The specialist you may want to see is a Pediatric Endocrinologist.

what does that mean?

People stress about their kids' every little "failure" to attain the 99th percentile.

Growth is not something that parents freak out because their kid is not in the 99th percentile but when a child is growing more slowly and that growth rate appears to slow down, it can be concerning. My nephew had serious asthma as a very young child, leading to hospitalization. His growth was affected and the Doctors acted quickly to deal with that problem. In his case, there was a clear connection between a known medical issue. But when growth in a smaller child slows down even more, people get concerned.

Yes. People do that.

What does this mean: “He has been falling out of his weight percentile since he was an infant (not premature), therefore pediatrician is not concerned at all.”

Has his weight percentile been dropping? When my daughter had just turned 4 she was 33lbs and 38.5 inches. The following year she was 35.8lbs and 41 inches, which was a drop in percentile but not a concerning one since she was still generally following her curve, in the same range. She is petite. Averages are just that. Someone has to be below average.

CDC growth chart for boys ages 2 to 20. According to that he's in the 10th percentile. It is considered healthy, still.

OP here. I thought average 4 year old is 40 lbs according to this website.

https://kidshealth.org/en/parents/growth-4-to-5.html

Which standard website parents use to calculate BMI, weight & height percentile for young kids?

Has he ever seen an allergist to check for allergies? My children with allergies compared to my other children without allergies were always petite in weight. They'd grow in height fine, but weight has always been on the lower end of percentiles, and actually dropped as toddlers.

For a just turned 4 year old boy, that’s 19% for height and 16% for weight... small, but not crazily so and not disproportionately skinny at all.

There is no harm in seeing a GI who can order some basic blood tests for allergies and absorption disorders. We did this for my skinny kid and some surprises were found.

Some kids are big and some kids are small. My kids are small, they are underweight according to their BMI, and they always have been. DH and I were too. The pediatrician is not concerned.

Do you mean he has been moving down on weight curves each year or that he has been on his current weight curve (10th percentile) for the past year or two?

Ask your Pediatrician for a recommendation. Let him know that you are concerned and that you understand that he is not but you would like to talk to a specialist.

Is your family smaller? Could this be hereditary or does it look to be out of the norm? My kid is on the other side of things, he has always been in the 99th percentile and our Pediatrician has been clear that he is fine and healthy and to ignore the people who are worried that he is over weight.

My just turn 4 year old is 39 inch & 31 lb. I am not concerned about his height, but I am more concerned about his weight. He gains 1 pound over the past year, and he is a picky eater. We have already supplement with pediasure & multi-vitamins. And, he eats ice cream occasionally as well. Is there any specialist recommendation to check to see why he does not gain much weight over time? He has been falling out of his weight percentile since he was an infant (not premature), therefore pediatrician is not concerned at all. We have consulted with nutritionist & feeding therapist, but they are not that useful. Every website have different number for average height/weight for each age group, which is the standard one that I should follow?
