Some people truly don't feel the cold like you do, OP. He's not going to freeze to death on a morning like today. Cold air doesn't make you sick. Let it go.

My 14 yo will wear just a hoodie with shorts for as long as we let him. I leave for work before everyone else gets up, so its up to DH to get him to wear something warmer (if he chooses to pick that fight). My job is to make sure he has some pants and a heavier coat that fits -- so that he can't say he doesn't have anything heavier to wear.

I think middle school is the worst for this. My 5th grader will reluctantly wear pants and a heavier coat because the teachers may not let him outside for recess, if its too cold and he's not bundled up enough. Then I think by HS, some kids decide on their own its best to bundle up sometimes. The other day I saw the bus dropping off the high schoolers and all had on long pants while my 8th grader was wearing shorts.

Not a hill to die on and a classic case of natural consequences.

I might draw the line at 15 BELOW however.

Now. Stop fighting about it. If he's cold enough, he'll wear a coat. If he's not, he won't. He will not die of exposure.

My 14 year old DD does this too and I just can’t understand it. She was trying to walk out last Friday for a football game with a light sweater. I made her wear a coat. At this point she knows it’s cold out now and if she wants to freeze she can.

My son never wore one. And he always wore shorts. I got him a heavy fleece lined hoodie. That was as far as he would go. And he wasn’t alone. Rare to see a coat at a high school bus stop.

When they were in MS I would make him leave the house in a coat. He’s stand on the front porch and put it right into his backpack.

He’s an adult now and still doesn’t wear a coat and wears shorts all year round.

Jackets are unnecessary, get him a comfy hoodie.

Ds is anti-jacket too. He complains they're too bulky, slows him done, and other excuses.

He wore shorts yesterday. I got him to wear half leggings under them. That was a win.

He will get it when he’s waiting for you to come pick him up in the cold. My 15 year old played in the band at a cold football game last week, then had to wait for a bit for us to pick him up. He survived, but has wore a coat ever since.

Boys are hard headed.

If they don't feel the cold, I guess they're healthy and strong?

My 14 year old always bundles up, just like everyone else in the family. We love winter and this weather, but we don't go out without covering as much as skin as possible.

I gave up when my son was in 9th grade.

It took one day at 10 degrees (with windchill) and a late (very late) bus to make him learn his lesson.

He was close enough to home that he wasn't in danger of dying of frostbite or anything, but far enough away that he was really really really cold by the time he got home.

My son needs to learn things the hard way I guess.
