Yes, it's happening even in Ganglandia. Not all consultants are $$$$. Those who truly don't have much money can receive help from CollegeTracks (a great resource - I wish it were at more MCPS schools). Another program is https://imentor.org/.
The rest of us use whatever resources we can find.

I’m a DC parent of a college freshman. I wouldn’t have even known where to begin to find a college application coach. Don’t know anyone who had one. We survived and he’s doing fine.

My experience has been that parents who went to no name state U or off brand private have saved up a lifetime of insecurity to invest in DC’s college admissions consultant.

Often they are referred to as consultants rather than coaches (if that helps with googling). There are several old long threads over on College Confidential.

Many consultants offer a la carte services, such as only helping with essays.

I thought we were the only family we knew that hired one, then my kid got a look at the calendar and he knew half her clients.

Yup, it's been helpful so far. Coach was able to tell DC that an essay topic was inappropriate. DC would have been crushed if I had told him that.

Really encouraged the "show don't tell" method. Again, DC took this better from someone else.

When did this become a thing and what are they doing for your DC? I'm learning that a lot of parents in our community hired coaches to help their kids with the college application process. It's too late for us since DC is a senior and almost done with applications.
