What is your budget? If in the 75-115k range, go with BMW X7 or Merc GLS. The v8 X7 drives fantastic, especially if you get it with dynamic handling package.

If in the 55-75k range, go with the Lincoln Aviator or new 2020 Audi Q7 that is coming out. Aviator in Grand Touring trim is very nice for the price.

The XC90 is very dated at this point, even with the refresh.

I had a sequoia and went to a q7. A gx or sequoia are huge vehicles compared to what op was looking at.

If you work in dc or Arlington parking garage clearance was our biggest issue with that frame.

It's built on the Generation-1 Tundra/Sequoia chassis, which is THE most reliable half-ton truck platform in automotive history.

Everything else is a joke compared to Toyota/Lexus

I heard these are roll-over prone though

Re the volvo - read the forum swedespeed and the posts about the car. I love the look and was set to buy one but the technology is causing problems.

Thanks all. Relative is an engineer and very up on technology. Look alike Mercedes and Audi are the top 2 contenders.

We have the Audi Q7. It's great. Agree with PP that the interior and on board computer can be a bit complicated, but the dealership has a concierge that will walk you through the controls and set up as often as you need.

My friend just bought the BMW X5 I think that's the one, the big BMW SUV anyway), and it's also really nice.

I have a 2019 Q7.
For an older person I would make sure they are tech savvy. It is a rather complicated vehicle to get used to on the controls.

Rides nice, decent space and very quiet interior.

Gosh the Aviator is soooo expensive $75k!! I certainly wouldn’t get that even though it has a nice interior.

We own Audi Q5 while it is an awesome car most people only keep for three years and they lease. After 60,000 many Audi’s have oil engine issues. Hence Audi has a higher lease rate than Acura or Lexus in that market.

I love the Audi the seats are awesome gas mileage and premium gas not so much.

In the luxury SUV market...the only thing I'd buy is a Model X. Actually even the Model S can have a "3rd row" with rear facing seats, for kids unto ~100lbs. That makes even the Model S a '7 seater".

Make sure he owns them only under the warranty period. You don't want to be blamed for the recommendation if they get hit with a big repair bill down the road. A friend of ours had a GL550 and the engine needed to be replaced at 40k miles. The total bill came out to over $30k, fortunately under warranty.

GLS (especially the redesigned 2020) is a step above everything else.

An elderly relative is looking to buy an SUV that has three rows to accommodate grandkids, so I am doing some research for him. If you looked at or own any of these three, I would love your opinions:

- Volvo XC90
- Lincoln Aviator
- Audi Q7
- Mercedes GLS

Thank you!
