No set number, but he usually winds up with a lot. We don’t buy much during the year. If we did then we’d probably do less. I would just do what you want and not worry about the opinions on here.

One toy or "most-wanted" item, one book, one "most-wanted" item of clothing, a stocking.

They get plenty of other gifts from family, friends, teachers, etc.

I love that my kids actually appreciate what they get and what they have. I've seen kids with a mountain of presents just tear through and even ask to stop so they can take a break and go do something else. It gets absurd.

2 real gifts but then filler things that they would have gotten anyways...socks..pjs...new backpack etc

We have 4 kids. We make sure each kid has the same number of gifts. It varies year to year, but somewhere between 8-10 to open on Christmas morning. We often do a family gift, too. The grands give them gifts as well (one gift per kid).

We have no set number. Gifts are from DH (I'm Jewish, as are my kids so they get Hanukkah gifts - obviously 8 each - from me). If what he chooses is on the larger/more expensive side, it'll just be one gift. Other times it'll be a few smaller items, often related but not always. Typically it's $100 or less per kid so there's never a huge number of gifts for anyone...I think 4 or 5 was the most at any one Christmas and that was they year one kid got a hamster so it was a bunch of related packages like a coupon for the pet, the cage, a bag of food, a bag of litter, etc.

We go for quality and quality time, not quantity.

Two toys, a book or craft, one small gift from each sibling to the other, stockings.

About the same. We also celebrate Hanukkah and his birthday is December 18th so he gets a ton

This year 4 gifts each: one from sibling, one from us, two from Santa plus a book each, jammies, and slippers. One small toy in the stocking plus some candy. Maybe one larger joint gift, we're not sure yet. Small extended family but they get plenty of other presents.

Kids are still little. Usually one big thing and a book or two from us. Grandparents do another couple gifts each. I'm not into a huge pile under the tree. Few pricier and longer use gifts is preferred. We don't do stockings.

Similar for us, 5 or 6 or so. Our extended family is small, so they only get a few more gifts on top of that.

OK, some are horrified by the OP who says her kids are each getting two toys, a dress, and a full stocking from her/DH.

My kids don't get much more from us, honestly:
About two toys -- one from us, one from Santa; maybe two toys from Santa if what is asked for is small
Usually one item of clothing, not necessarily a dress, but maybe a pair of fashion boots or something fun and not needed
A book, or maybe a coloring book/markers or craft book that has craft items with it
A full stocking

I know that doesn't seem like a lot, but they get SO MUCH, overall, from grandparents, aunts/uncles/cousins, teachers and daycare employees, neighbors, etc. They get a bag of candy and a toy from the crossing guard, honestly. My oldest gets a gift from her bus driver. It's very nice, but it ends up as a mountain of gifts. So even though DH are kind of minimal in our approach, our kids are getting tons of gifts each Christmas.
