and eventually they'll end up back at DCPS at their neighborhood school, you can bet KIPP won't be taking this child as a high schooler!
I work for the city and trust me, cops don't even usually bother minors with handguns. Nothing happens, they are released within 12 hours, none go to juvenile unless I killed or critically injured someone. The average person arrested for murder in DC, already has at least 10 prior gun arrests.

this. I promise you he is back home with his caregivers and at most will get a suspension but of course DC Council wants to disallow all suspensions. He will be in DCPS.

Actually, DC has two juvenile facilities. One on Mt. Olivet with a program run by DCPS (for youth awaiting adjudication) and another in Laurel, MD (for longer term detained youth) with a program run by a charter https://www.seeforever.org/tag/new-beginnings-youth-development-center
The violence in this city for youth, specifically those in EOR communities, is striking and indiscriminate about DCPS or charter. Let's not allow this forum to politicize something that all of our city youth are crying for us to address. It is horrible that our students feel the need to carry weapons, make threats such as these, and harm the schools tying to serve them.
I hope that all of the teachers and staff at the school are coming together to support one another and encourage everyone to see this as a part of a larger issue of violence impacting our youth (for both the victims and the aggressor).
The violence in this city for youth, specifically those in EOR communities, is striking and indiscriminate about DCPS or charter. Let's not allow this forum to politicize something that all of our city youth are crying for us to address. It is horrible that our students feel the need to carry weapons, make threats such as these, and harm the schools tying to serve them.

Federal law requires schools to expel students who bring a firearm to school.
