Even if you can turn on red you still have to come to a complete stop first. No most of us dont do this, but its how the cameras get you, and by law what you are doing is illegal.

Contesting tickets online is BS. Yes it suspends the ticket so no further action is taken, but you don't get a hearing or anything like that. I had a ticket from nearly a year ago and everytime I checked it just showed as contested. Suddenly on Friday I got an email stating that a judgement has been made and I'm liable. I'm like WTF??? I didn't even get a chance to discuss why I'm not liable other than the tiny box with the word limit.

Never pay. Always fight. Make them earn the money. "In the intersection when it should not be" sounds like a strange charge. If the ticket cites a code section or regulation, you can look that up. If you're charged with something other than failure to stop before turning, then you're not guilty.

You didnt stop behind the white line before turning and therefore in the intersection during the red light.

If you had come to a full stop AND done so behind the white line you would not have triggered the red light camera.

You cannot win with photo tickets.

Can you contest online? I would do that first.

I would contest in DC. You can walk in and it takes just a short time to get someone to make a judgement. They can pull the video right there, if they want to. My friend had 3 tickets and they did not feel like finding all the video, so they dropped all three.

OP here.

I appreciate all your answers, and particularly this one. The County should be able to give people the real reason. I know a lot of people think they stop, when they actually just slow down. Stating the exact reason for the ticket would help everyone out.

I'm going to pay it. Lesson learned!

NP. Is your time (to take off work and go to court for a few hours) worth more than $75? For me, provided their were no points, I'd pay the fine and move on with my life.

$75? It's not worth your time to fight it - even if you're 100% in the right.

Just pay it.

This happened to me many years ago. I received the same type of ticket after turning right on red, at an intersection where it is legal to do so. I contested the ticket, and they responded by sending video showing that I had not come to a complete stop before taking my right turn. I was in the wrong and paid the ticket, but it did not cost me anything to contest it in the first place.

if you turned right without coming to a complete stop that is a violation. I would not bother contesting it.
If you have more time than money though and feel like you will win to waste your morning in court rather than pay the fine, then go ahead.

I received a letter saying I need to pay $75 because my car was photographed in the intersection when the light was red. I was turning right, and my car is angled to the right in the photo. It is legal to turn right on red in that intersection because there is no sign prohibiting it. However, I remember not coming to a complete stop before turning right. The letter does not state that it has video showing my car did not come to a complete stop, it only says that I should not have been in the intersection at all, which is strange considering that cars are allowed to turn right when the traffic light is red.

Do you think I can contest this ticket?
Thank you.
