I believe # 1 Whitman plays # 2 Wootton this Saturday. Should be a good one.

The registration that I've seen is just the school required/county required health form and basic info. At least at Whitman no one asks for your club team. Plus the coach there doesn't see the registration info - a parent handles it. Maybe other schools handle it differently.

From what i have seen, Wootton plays a fast style that values possession but allows their highly skilled players to attack. Players are not that big physically but highly skilled and fast as mentioned.

That is DA rule.

"players competing in the DA may only compete in outside competition if called up for Youth National Team duty or if given written consent by U.S. Soccer Development Academy staff."

There is no rule in MCPS that says DA players can't play. It is a club by club rule not a county rule.

speed, skills, size, position.

My DS played for 4 years at one of the Ws (not Wootton) so I've seen the process. First, not everyone has played travel and that's usually pretty obvious. It's not that you have to have played travel but the kids who have are used to a high level of play and it shows. Physical fitness is important - there are usually short and long speed drills or tests. The season starts right away so there is no time for a kid who isn't fit to suddenly get fit.

Tryouts are over several days, plus some kids will have played on the MS team. There are usually 2-3 coaches (V and JV and assistant) managing it and breaking the kids into smaller groups. I think everyone gets a fair look.

There are 40ish spots across the two teams, but usually at least 25-30 returning players so around 10-15 spots for new players. Not all returning players make the cut because the move from JV to Varsity is a big one and not all the incoming juniors will make it.

No waivers, they are not allowed.

Concentrate on speed and skills. That is what they are looking for when over a hundred come out for twenty-something spots.

Virtually all of the players who make either JV or varsity at WJ, Whitman, Churchill, BCC, or other strong MoCo programs will be long time club players, and I think this is true of Wootton as well, though they are not usually quite as competitive as the others listed. Some players selected will play on high level club teams, but not all. A kid who is a fantastic athlete can catch a coach's eye regardless of his level of club team. But you will rarely, if ever, see a kid with no travel experience make a varsity team at these schools and usually they won't make JV either.

I thought high level club players weren't allowed to play for MCPS?

Only DA players are not allowed.

can't they get a waiver.

Development Academy players are not permitted to play HS, though some only play DA part of the year so they can do both. Kids on ECNL, National League, State Cup, etc. are free to play HS if they wish.

DS will be a freshman next year and is wondering what they look for in tryouts. Do all the team members play club soccer? What level? I think DA kids can't play so are most of the kids just below DA?
