You and everybody else alive today have no idea of the mindset in 1492 so I wouldn't judge him or anyone else that I've never met who died almost 600 years ago.
But if we're deciding who to honor with a holiday, then "well I wasn't alive so I can't judge him" isn't particularly compelling. I mean, there are lots of people who died 600 years ago who we can't judge, include many many indigenous Americans whose deaths were the result of this man's choices.
I still think it's weird to honor someone on the birthday of the people We didn't schedule MLK day on James Earl Ray's birthday.
I think maybe we should disconnect days off from these kinds of value statements. Be like the Canadians and just have a "bank holiday". Then figure out a better way to honor our First Nations than staying home from work.
