Be patient. They are in a hormonal natural disaster. Like a sharknado. Not a humble brag, but a glimpse into your future: my oldest was 15/16 ten years ago and I thought she hated me. Cleaning last week, I found a note she’d written back and forth with a friend in which she said “My mom is so calm that I kinda feel guilty.”

My DD, then 16, walks around talking on her phone. She sees me, I assume, as she walks into the kitchen.

DD (into phone): Great, Dylan! Geez, thanks so much, Dylan.... hey, Dylan what time are we meeting them? Okay, bye, Dylan!

DD hangs up.

Me: how’s Dylan?

DD: (furious and suspicious). How did you know I was talking to Dylan?!! Are you bugging my phone?!


I love those sweet mother-daughter moments.

Not mine but my parents with my younger brother...

My brother, 17, got up unusually early after a night of partying and ran into our Dad in the hallway. My brother told my dad that he was so sorry but he had too much to drink last night and left the car at his friend’s house. My dad said that he wasn’t happy about the drinking but was so proud of my brother for not drinking drunk and being responsible. It was really a nice father-son moment.

Until they went downstairs and the car was parked sideways in our driveway.

My dad was furious! “You were so drunk you didn’t even remember driving home!”

My kid threatened to call child protective services. Because I took his iPhone until he turned in missing work and handed him a flip phone. Or should I say— the phone I bought and was on our family plan. I was like— have at it. But you might want research the iPhone policies in foster homes.

DS pulled out of a friend’s driveway way too fast and hit the trash cans at the curb. Then he pulled forward too fast and ran into the friend’s garage doors - pretty much totaling them.

That was a sweet parenting day.

Got a call from police that 17 yr dd was under the influence and I had to come get her (she was passenger, driver was sober.)
Husband out of town, had to get 7yr old sibling out of bed - at midnight - and bring with -- it was raining. Good times, my friends!

My DD once threw such a bad tantrum that I was stopped from carrying her out of the store because people thought it was a kidnapping.

Not exaggerating. She was 4.
