Victim blaming. Nice.

Just to be clear, “key fob” refers to newer cars that can be started remotely? Not the little remote control where you need to push a button to lock/unlock the door?

Ha. I’ve lived in crime-infested S. Arlington for many years and I’ve never had my car broken into. I see on Nextdoor that it happens, though. The incidence rate in N. Arlington is alarming though! I guess us southies don’t have as many valuables hanging around in our cars.

3 weeks ago police chased burglars from the Madison Manor area. They flattened the tires but the driver drove on flats back into DC.

Police do what they can but can’t be everywhere at once. The best chance we have to get these guys actually caught is for more people to install cameras and call 911 as soon as they are triggered by someone.

To avoid car break ins, keep windows up, doors locked, and key fobs secured in something metal. If your car is unlocked with valuables inside, oh well. May as well just leave it all on the roof.

I work from home and sit facing the street about 8 - 10 hours per day. Fedex, USPS, UPS, trash trucks - daily occurrences. Could not tell you the last time I saw a patrol car on my N. Arl street. They are just not out in the neighborhoods and side streets.

I don't know the veracity of these claims, but a lot of people say they're buying faraday boxes in which to store their car keys at night.

Yeah, your fobs are always transmitting and that’s why car unlocks when you put your hand on door handle

Just don’t keep valuables in car. Id rather they unlock it, rifle around for my parking meter change, then break a window for same result.

ACPD's response has been to tell everyone to lock their cars - https://police.arlingtonva.us/9pmroutine/

Property crime is skyrocketing in N Arlington and nothing is being done about it. ACPD won't even come out to investigate and just provides link to online report. Do we have to wait for something awful like a confrontation between a property owner and perpetrator going bad before this increase in crime is taken seriously?

This is a very real concern. With 165 events this year, somebody is going to end up in a confrontation. Someone is going to end up hurt or even dead. Yes, people should lock their cars, but you cannot just dismiss this as dummies not locking their cars. A lot of crime is created by people innocently creating the opportunity for it - that doesn't mean it not work investigating and solving.

But why are we keeping valuables in the car anyways?

The bad guys must have some new tech - a lot of those reporting are swearing they locked their cars up.

Did you remove your valuables and lock your car, though? These are crimes of opportunity. The ACPD keeps telling people to lock their cars and houses because they keep talking to people who had their sh*t stolen because they didn't have their doors locked.
