Mclean is out of National League.

Yes, I meant to use that as an example of how teams that are in the National League historically do fairly well placing players in D1. Jamil is a great coach by all accounts, but whether he could help place kids who are on teams that are not at that level is an open question.

Those McLean teams placed way more players in D3 than D1.

Still better than most non-DA clubs/teams do. They also developed players who moved to DA after years and years at McLean and went on to D1. It may be that those golden years are now over, but Jamil’s players in those age groups had a great run.

Why do people care about D1 v D3 if you are not going pro? Is the objective to get a scholarship, and if so, who cares as long as the school is otherwise an excellent fit?

Maybe I'm misreading the title of this thread, but if you are coming embracing this objective at U17, i would say you are about 3-4 years too late.

Boys ECNL for McLean is a way to field more "McLean players" on their highest level travel teams. It is a reaction to the overwhelming numbers of players not being FROM McLean when they were in National League. So they've exiting a system that had promotion and relegation (National League), since that required them to field competitive teams that were not all local players. ECNL teams for McLean will be much more McLean-centric, and not as competitive. McLean parents might wonder why fewer boys go on to college soccer with ECNL, and it will because they watered down their program to deal with parent pressure.

Really? I’m pretty skeptical that a boys’ ECNL team is going to be of much help getting players into D1 schools. Are there many local examples from last year of this happening?

Of course, OP should be really asking whether it makes sense for the kid to play D1 at all. If that continues to be the goal for whatever reason and you are not at a club like Celtic, DA would be a cheaper option with a higher likelihood of success.

Mclean and Arlington have peaked - best teams have graduated and current age groups are not as competitive. The Arl 98's and the Mcl '00 will not be repeated at those clubs given current landscape.

Definitely the coach. A good coach that likes your player will probably also have great connections.
