High SAT (1500)
Good extracurriculars
Rigorous courseload (all weighted/AP classes when offered in all core subjects)

Meh GPA, her weighted is just below 4.0.

UVA is the top choice but I think the GPA is too low. Should my kid wait for a grading period, as senior grades are looking at all As, maybe one B. Trying to decide as transcript requests are due next week.

Thanks for any thoughts or wisdom.

The GPA is way too low for UVA. It's not happening unfortunately.

+1. Your kid only gets a half year credit for admissions senior year. . They manage a 4.4 and they are looking at below a 4.05. A 4.6 1st semester gets them below a a 4.1. WM might be possible with the heavy weighting on SATs. A 4.1 won’t get your kid in even from TJ. And if you kid is below a 4.0, either they can handle the rigor and wind get the 4.3 or 4.6. Or the screwed around for three years.

Do your kid a favor, sit down with Naviance and tell them the cold hard reality before all their friends get in. Then aim for WM— RD with great 1st semester grades (still a reach, but the emphasize test scores more), VT, JMU, CNU, etc. or look at NOVA and transfer.

But you kid just isn’t getting in. It’s cruel to let them spend all year thinking they can.

I’m assuming an unhooked NOVA kid.

But an

We did look at naviance. WM is a pretty good shot from her school for both GPA and SAT.

UVA is borderline/reach with this SAT based off naviance if she can get her grades up above a 4.0.

It is her favorite of all the schools we toured. She had a really rotten semester early on, and has been working hard to redeem herself. If she doesn't get accepted there, so be it. But it does sound like her best shot is to wait for regular decision and throw the dice.

Thanks for all the input.

Gonna be another record setting year in terms of number of applications, probably. Have a good back up plan.

GPA is how UVA (and W&M) justify increasing admissions from the rest of Virginia. If they just used standardized tests, it would be even higher percentage from NOVA.

And they give credit to a kid whose grades get better over time.

+1, there's a good chance the GPA will go up with Senior Fall grades--more weighted courses and high level of motivation.

OP again. I would have my kid ask the counselor, but there are no appointments until after the transcript requests are due.

The GPA/SAT combination puts my kid right at the dividing line between acceptance and wait list.

Does regular admission have less of a chance of acceptance than early action?

Should my kid apply early action or the regular cycle for UVA?

Meh GPA, her weighted is just below 4.0.
