It is a busy time of year for HS students..

Sometimes they really do need downtime. It isn't about wanting to party, it is about wanting a break. Just to sleep in, lounge around, etc

Vacations are often fun but not relaxing.

Home with supervision (a grandparent).

The want to party, not study.

You think they want to party with grandma?

These responses are somewhat judgy and don’t reflect my experience as a teenager nor my kid’s feelings now. Some people react to the stress of high school by needing vacation time to be low key. Why not respect that? Especially if you’re going to have a grandparent really supervising. Take the younger kids and let your hard working teens chill!

Are you just going to some shitty beach house where they still have to do chores? Or a real vacation?

I loved going on vacations with my parents. My sister hated it. I remember them forcing her go to and her just sitting on her phone in amazing places like Moscow.

They can study in the trip.

Yes. Why can't they relax on your vacation? Do you drag them all over and push them to do activities?

Some of my vacations with the kids were not exactly what *I* wanted, but I was satisfied and the kids could relax. We once went to Daytona Beach in the off season and stayed oceanfront for cheap. The older kids, who'd just finished a week of finals, laid around and stared at the water. I think they read one book. I let them each drive the convertible we rented. That's all they had the mental bandwith for.

DS 17 never says no to joining us on vacation. But on our last spring break vacation we let him bring his friend with him and she was a great addition to the vacation. It let them have a break from us and do things they wanted to do together. He went on vacation with her family over Summer too. Perhaps letting them bring a friend with them might help?

We take good vacations I swear! They just seem exhausted and would rather do nothing over school breaks, which apparently is not normal.

My kids love to vacation with us. I agree - it’s not studying. Either they think your plans are lame or they have other plans.

Your kids are weird. Or you take crappy vacations. My college aged kids still vacation with us.

My two high schoolers don’t want to go anywhere for spring break. They would rather be hone to study for AP exams. Two younger kids want to go. Would you drag your high schoolers along or just take the kids who want to go?
